A "resonated", "matched" antenna works best for SWLing. Note that I said
"resonated" not "resonant" antenna. A much misunderstood term called
"capture area" is important for receiving antennas. Basically this means
that you put up as much metal as you can as high as you can covering as
much area as you can. This will give you coupling with more of the incoming
wavefront and give you more RF at the antenna terminals to work with. You
resonate a monster like this by adding reactance of either inductive (+) or
capacitive (-) value in order to null out the reactance presented by the
antenna at the operating frequency. To "match" the antenna to the receiver,
you use a matching network to transform the impedance at the antenna
terminals to the 50 ohms required by most modern high grade receivers.
A device that can combine both of these functions in one box is called
a random wire tuner. To adjust it you simply tweak it for the loudest
signal at the frequency you're using. Simple no?

Hi Dave.
Just ignore these kinds of posts. I have no problem at all with
whatever radio-related information anybody wants to post. I find most
interesting. And when I tire of a subject, the K key works real well.
Advanced rn users even know about wild cards! You know, like how to kill
anything with "sw" in the title, etc?

I just get Info-Hams Digest mailed to me because I don't have direct access to
things like rec.radio.shortwave. What is it anyway? Where is it anyway? Who
cares? I do!
I vote to keep the content just what it is now, SWL, Scanning and Flames. When
did I get a vote anyway? :-) After all, those all are a part of my hamming.
If anyone cares to enlighten me (via E-mail or otherwise) on how this net
functions, I'd be glad to learn how to not encourage pollution of Hamming with
other radio stuff.
